Well, had to start taking my "rescue"pack as my peak flow has been consistently lower than the threshold of when to start it. Pretty sure that I have a chest infection. Unfortunately, because I decided to have a lazy Sunday, watching TV and knitting, I haven't made myself tired.
So, at gone three o'clock in the morning, I am writing this blog post. Bit annoyed with myself really, as Oliver is here, he's come down to see the dentist, but he's not an early riser so I might get away with not getting up to early.
I've tried having a milky drink, but it doesn't seem to have worked.

Soup, beautiful soup!
Well, it might not be, but that's what I did today. It was supposed to be a fairly quick make. Roast the veg with some garlic, ground cumin and ground coriander. Throw it in a pan, add stock, bring to the boil, then blitz with my blender.
That was the theory.
But.....I used swede as part of the soup......note to self, next time chop the swede up into smaller chunks. It took ages to get it soft, so a fast soup took up an incredible amount of time, almost three times as long.
Oh well, you live and learn.

Bitterly cold
This January has started off bitterly cold, but I can't let the cold get in the way of things.
One thing that I want to try this year is needle felting. With this in mind, and after looking online for prices of things, I decided that a hobble down to the market for a piece of dense foam was a good idea, as the mats are just foam, or bristle. The foam ones are quite expensive for what is a small piece of foam.
£3 for a 12 inch square, 3 inch deep piece.
I do need to get other things, but until I can go to Preston, I won't be getting them. (I have £25 in vouchers for Abakhan, the nearest is Preston, but the vouchers are to be used in the shop only, as I no longer have a car, and couldn't drive it if I had one, I have to wait until a kind friend is going and asks me along.)
Then on to the meat stall, a bag of bacon bits, don't mind if I do. £3.50 for 5 pound in weight.
Then a gentle hobble back along home on the seaward side of the sea wall. Tide out, and the sea very calm.

Tricycle "adventure"
Mum gave me cash for Yule, and as I'd sold my car I bought myself a tricycle to keep me semi-mobile for the time being.
Due to recent surgery I can't put pressure on my left ankle.
I had some paperwork that needed to be somewhere.
Who knew that riding a tricycle could be so challenging?
I won't say that I am comfortable with it yet, but I am working on it.
Until then I suppose riding up and down the prom will be me, until I am completely comfortable.
By the way, I got the paperwork where it needed to be.

Looking forward into 2019
Looking forward into 2019, I need to set myself some goals.
The first is master my tricycle. It's years since I even road a bicycle, as since the accident that damaged my left ankle, causing my foot to collapse, I have not felt secure enough to ride and bicycle. Also, as I had to sell my car, a couple of good reasons that I won't go into here, I need some form of getting around that is low impact. Today when I tried to ride my tricycle I was like a little kid, without much control. So that's a work in progress. I don't want to race, or anything like that, I just want to get around.
The second is to keep my container garden tidy, as possible.
Third, read, of course. Again, I think that I should read at least one classic, and at least one translated from another language. I also think that I should read, Early Riser, the three Shannara Chronicles that I have, The Book of Dust, and Undying. Maybe a book that takes me out of my "comfort zone".
Fourth, complete at least four of the OU, Open Learn courses.
Fifth, not to be on the last minute with Yule presents, especially when I decide to make them.
Sixth, and last, as there's plenty of goals here. Try to get back to tutoring, but that's something that I can only do so much towards.

Grr!
Years ago, when you were unemployed there were the papers to look through for vacancies, shop owners would advertise in their windows, and you just dropped in, or you wrote to prospective employers with your qualifications, even if they weren't advertising. The last resort was the job centre.
Back then, job centres had loads of postcards on boards, with available posts on them. You were supposed to make a note of the code on the card, and discuss with one of the approachable, job centre staff. Or, you could sit down and the member of staff, more often than not, would helpfully assist you to narrow down your options. There were careers advisors on hand as well. (I forgot to say, some cheeky people would take the job advert cards down, to ensure that no one pipped them to the post.) You could wander in, browse the jobs and walk out again.
Fast forward around twenty years, the card adverts were getting less on the boards, but job search machines had been installed. I can't remember exactly how they worked, but you fed some details in, and then a raft of possible jobs would appear, and you could get printouts with contact details. There were still careers advisors on hand. Security staff were beginning to appear, but their main job was to eject the odd stroppy person. The staff were still exceptionally helpful, and would look through options if you explained what you were looking for.
Fast forward to the present time. It's now called Jobcentre Plus, surely this is a complete misnomer? There are a scant dozen actual vacancies which are replicated on any available job board. That's your lot as far as jobs are concerned. No, as always, the secondary purpose of this place is to process people's claims........hold on.....no, it's not, as all that is done online these days, so if you have never used a computer you're stuffed.
The friendly helpful staff are dying out, they're being replaced by specially selected drones, who often, have never done any other actual work, other than follow their blessed "government guidelines", and do not seem to have an ounce of common sense between the whole centre's staff. (Profound apologies to the nice staff left over from the previous regime.....there are some.)
In the past, you could leave feeling positive, having had help to find a suitable, possible job to apply for, a course to further your career plans, a tricky form filled in, etc.
Now, with the advent of Universal Credit, you feel, at best ambivalent, at worst.........I shudder to think.
It's a depressing place where the people it is designed to provide help for, come out after being talked down to, forced onto courses that are as much use as a chocolate fireguard, with no actual useful information.
Oh, and there's no careers advisors in each centre.
This is supposed to be a service that helps unemployed people, but it's now a place where government elected drones get to feel smug. I wonder if they have a league table to see which "job coach" humiliates the most people in a week?

Lately
So......I had an operation on my left foot/ankle, again!
To amuse myself, and let friends know how I am, I have been writing posts on Facebook, as if I am my cat, Raphael.
I decided to gather them up and created a blog for Raphael.
It is called Raphael's blog.
Here's today's post.
Raphael's blog day 8
Yesterday slave Jean was braver, maybe she's getting a little better now?
She made her own dinner, just a sandwich, and washed the pots that were waiting to be washed.
I think that she might be getting stronger in her front legs too, as she doesn't look so tired after using the sticks.
That will be me lying across the white thing, and....I have found her toes sticking out, so I gave them lots of gentle headbumps through the day.
Jean spent quite a time talking on the phone about something, there were 4 calls, I think. At first she looked worried, but after the last, she was smiling.
The horse pickle gave her some pills to take, they only gave 10 days, they said the doctor would give the rest, but the doctor is not allowed to give them to Jean, only horse pickles can.
There was something in a letter that made Jean cross, but she looked determined after a while, so whoever sent the letter better watch out!
