Chest/lung infection

Wow! But not in a good way.  I can't believe how long this has been going on.  When I first visited the doctor in mid September, the symptoms had been around for at least three weeks.  I presumed that they were partly due to stress regarding my work situation at the moment, and hoped that they would clear on their own.
Turns out that the doctor thought that I had a chest infection.  So, I took the pills prescribed, but as they ran out I had my annual flu vaccine injection.  And I have reacted to them, mildly, in the past. After a couple more weeks, I was still feeling bad, returned to the doctor, who again thought it was a chest infection, but he sent me for a X-ray just to be sure.  It came back that I have a lower lung infection. So, more antibiotics, and return for a further X-ray four weeks after the last.
I thought that I had pulled muscles in my chest, and that is why it feels like someone has been jumping on it. I also have a cough, and keep going "clammy". I've been trying to rest as much as possible.  The good thing about this is that I have had very little trouble with my spinal stenosis, despite being ready for a new injection.
No doubt that this will all change tomorrow, when I return to work. I'm feeling a little apprehensive about that, but that's for another blog post.
Just for the record, this has been going on at least two months now, maybe two and a half.

Sometimes I really worry about things

It's the Tory party conference in Manchester at the moment so we are getting "news" articles in most news bulletins.  In the past two days we have learnt that the Tories wish to make long term unemployed work for their benefits.  Which might seem fair on the surface, but IF there are jobs for them to do, why aren't there paid jobs for them to apply for?
And today's little gem.  They propose that doctors, your town/village GP work a 12 hour day for 7 days a week.  This in itself again sounds fair, but...hold on!   Why should doctors have to do this, I know we do not have enough GPS and that in most areas they have far more patients than they can cope with, but surely the answer to this is not make the doctors work longer hours, but make sure we have more doctors wishing to be GPs.  They are under a lot of pressure as it is without piling on the pressure by asking them to work longer hours.
The GP surgery where I go already offers appointments most days between 7.30 in the morning and 7.30 at night Monday to Friday.  But so many of these appointments are wasted.  You sit in the waiting room, and there is usually a notice saying how many appointments were broken in a previous week.  It is usually around the 200 mark, at 10 minutes approximately for each appointment that adds up to a lot of time.  (Around 33 and half hours.)  If this figure is standard for most GP surgeries, that is a lot of lost time, that other patients could have used.  And I don't know if this is widespread, but I had an appointment one day, and it was dreadful weather, raining hard, strong wind and the waiting room was empty.  I commented on this to the receptionist, and she said that people don't turn up in bad weather.  Surely if they are ill and need to see a doctor, they should either turn up, or cancel, not just not bother?
Anyway, I worry about what the majority part of our government is hoping to achieve.  Will they stop when we are back to a social system like there was in Victorian times? As the gaps between the higher and lower paid are widening quite alarmingly.
If you are on a high wage a wage freeze might mean holidaying somewhere a little cheaper, but at the lower end of the scale a wage freeze can mean skimping on things that are essential.
As usual when I have a moan about this "wonderful" government of ours, I have gone off at tangents.  I don't have the answers, except that I think anyone who can vote, should vote in the next General Election.  The current government was elected by default as many voters stayed at home on election day, and I don't think it should happen again

New BP pills

Just before Xmas I was told my blood pressure was too high and I had to monitor it for a month then return to the doctor.  Well, after just a week monitoring it, it was obvious to me that the high readings weren't just "white coat syndrome", but it was up overall.
On Monday I visited the doctor and he changed my BP pills.  AT first I thought they weren't working but today I woke up feeling very faint, with a sore throat.  So, I'm not at work.  I've taken my BP and it seems to be on it's way down. So perhaps they just needed to stabilise my BP, before they could start bringing it down.  I have felt dreadful since the tablets were changed, and did this morning, still feel faint now, but it is dropping.  Hurrah!

OK

Last Wednesday I was diagnosed with a condition called "silent reflux". In essence my stomach acid is burning my vocal chords.
Treatment?
Well...the consultant gave me an advice sheet......which is great...presuming I can read it....I know there are many adult illiterates, but I could.
The two sided advice note suggested diet changes......I have been doing those since April this year! also it says how I should have 2 lots of antacid/day...because I was on one dose..nothing was said. There was no suggestion I should rest my voice..or anything....only upon consulting my family doctor did I get clarification. OK the consultant was ruling out extreme nasty problems..but a bit more advice would help. I have no idea when the Speech/language/voice therapist will have a vacancy to see me...and as my sons both had speech therapy I appreciate their workload. I do not expect until Mid November...so...you might appreciate...a little more advice would have been very useful...what a shame I had to visit my family doctor...when 2-3 Min's more of the consultants time would have been enough! It took me 6 days to get an appointment with my family doctor...I appreciate that consultants are on a much higher wage...but a couple of minutes to dispense advice would have been welcomed in my case.

"sigh"

So, I had problems getting out of bed this morning, the pain had gone worse.
After a couple of hours I rung our out of hours doctor.
After a quick visit to the out of hours doctor I have had confirmed, yes, it's sciatica, and could take up to 6 weeks to clear. CRIPES!!!!!!
Pass me another book and some needlecraft of some type to do please?
Have got some very strong painkillers, hope these work well. From what I remember, last time I took these ones, they almost knocked me out.

Erm!

I have to go to the doctor's in the morning. My sick note runs out on Thursday. I know I'm not ready to return to work just yet, due to the problems the insoles are causing me. I know I can't yet stand all day, as my job usually requires me to do. If I had a more sedentary department to work for, I might be able to return, but not yet. I just hope the doctor agrees, as the physiotherapist told me not to walk so much until I've seen him again, and we have looked at other solutions.
